WHY SEEK THERAPY?
Whilst you may be facing a difficult and unexpected life situation or trauma, the decision to speak to a therapist about what worries you need not necessarily result from a moment of crisis. It can also be driven by a wish to talk about the things that matter, to understand your desires and values, to free yourself from problematic patterns of behaviour and to learn to tolerate conflict and find new means of self-realisation.
As well as addressing specific crises then, therapy can also help with broader concerns linked to a general dissatisfaction with life – to a sense that something is just not quite right. See here for a non-exhaustive list of areas covered.
MY APPROACH
My practice is informed by the psychoanalytic tradition. Together we will explore the issues that you bring, working collaboratively and creatively to think about them within the context of your life and your unique personal history. In thinking about the unconscious factors shaping your experiences and relationships with others, we will look to address the issues and difficulties troubling you. Please see the FAQ section for further session-related details.
WHAT IS PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a form of ‘talking therapy’ based on the idea that our conscious thoughts and feelings are largely determined by unconscious affects and desires, of which we are not only unaware but which often conflict with our conscious beliefs and wishes. Through a process of exploration and discovery, it provides a unique space for reflection and for uncovering the singular meanings of experiences and suffering. Problems talked about in sessions are not only viewed as causes of suffering but are also seen as sources of knowledge that can be used to bring about change and open up new ways of experiencing satisfaction in life, work and relationships.
